Eating on the Cheap

Hey VISTA team,
Do you have any tips or tricks for eating well on the VISTA stipend? Have you started cooking with your friends more? Do you have a go to meal you cook when you're waiting for your next stipend check to come in?

Share what you've learned -- whether its what to buy, where to shop, or a recipe -- in the comments section!

I'm curious to hear what you've been doing and eager to hopefully add a little variety to my recipe collection during the last couple months of my service.

Dollar menu! I don't like fast food, but two items off the dollar menu gives you a meal for $2. It's surprisingly filling, and going up to $3 is like overkill.

1) I look online for local specials (buy 1 get one free or 50% off deals at restaurants/dessert places) and take friends along.

2) Free food at community events

3) Free food provided for volunteering at local events :)

4) I started ordering groceries online through Angel Food Ministries. For $30 I get 1 month's supply of groceries (which really turns out to be like 2 months for me). It is enough to feed a family of 4 for 1 week or 1 person for a month. How is works is you look online for a local site and either go to the site on a set day/time to order or order online before the deadline. Then you simply pick up your food at the site on the day they specify. The food is mostly non-perishable or frozen. The signature box of groceries comes with a mix of main courses, veggies, starches, eggs, milk, and dessert. The one down side is that some of the meat is a little too artificially processed like the "country fried chicken fritters" that I got once :/ but a lot of it is edible like a whole chicken, lasagna, or steak. Here is the link for the site: www.angelfoodministries.com

5) And if you're really in a bind I've read that eating an apple or drinking a bottle of water before eating will make you feel fuller faster. So that can help make one meal turn into left overs for another meal.

1. Go on-line and agree to fill out surveys for marketing reseach and you can get the best coupons for food and other items. You usually recieve a survey in the mail and fill it out and they will send you coupons based on your preferneces. You will get more junk mail, but it can definetly be worth it.

2. You should always tell people you are in AmeriCorps and explain what you do and try to get discounts or free stuff. Local places are the best.
